The parties on Koh Phangan follow the cycle of the moon: full moon, half moon, black moon, half moon and back again.

FULL MOON PARTY
The most famous outdoor party in the world takes place once a month in Haad Rin on Koh Phangan in Thailand. Starting in the late eighties the Full Moon Party became famous all over the world partly due to the increasing popularity of (electronic) dance music in the nineties. Nowadays big sound systems on the beach play everything from psy-trance to house and techno and from RnB to drum 'n bass. Enter the beautiful and huge party zone on the beach with blacklights, fluorescent colours, fireworks and thousands of happy people dancing and partying under the light of the full moon until sunrise… You should definitely experience it at least once.

The nicely decorated white arena at Paradise Bungalows is still the biggest and best venue with the coolest atmosphere. You can expect quality house and progressive house played by resident dj A and occassionally international guest dj's. Here it all started more than 15 years ago and it was here were global dj heroes like Sven Väth and Danny Rampling played in the past.

 
Next to Paradise at the furthest southern point you can relax and enjoy a great view on the beach at The Rock. At the end of one of the small main streets that lead you to the busiest part of the beach you will find close to each other several bars and clubs banging loud music and making the crowd go wild. Drop In Club is a popular place playing popular hip hop, RnB and music from the charts. Next to it you find Zoom Bar and Vinyl Club both playing psy-trance and techno. The Cactus Bar is playing mainstream tunes and for banging jungle and drum & bass you can visit the Orchid. If you like trance you can also go to Tommy’s. On the northern end of the beach you can relax, have a milkshake and sit or dance in a mellow atmosphere in the Mellow Mountain. Because of the huge popularity of the full moon parties it is recommended to book your accommodation in advance. If you do so you will be sure to stay in a nice place and not to be overcharged. Many people that come for the full moon party choose to stay in a more quiet area. Note that it is easy and cheap to take a taxi to Haad Rin from anywhere on the island.

HALF MOON PARTY
Also very popular and well organized. It takes place twice a month, a week before and a week after the Full Moon Party and is held on a beautiful location in the Ban Tai jungle. There is a big dancing arena, three bars and several food stalls all nicely decorated with sculptures, light projectors, neon-art and beautiful UV decorations. BLACK MOON PARTY
Attracts up to 1,500 people to the beach of Ban Tai each month. The party is always 2 weeks before (and after…) full moon. You can expect a nice beach party which is much smaller than the full moon party but therefore has a more intimate atmosphere. The beach with views over Koh Samui makes a wonderful dance floor, decorated with a lot of neon-art and UV decorations. The music played is pumping progressive and psy-trance.

OTHER PARTIES
The Backyard Club in Haad Rin is the place to be on the morning after the Full Moon. After sunrise have a breakfast at ‘Chicken Corner’ and then head to this banging after party which takes place between 10 am and 10 pm. They also organize a weekly party every Sunday with progressive house and breaks. There are several places organizing warm up parties on the evening of the full moon. Between the Haad Rin pier and sunrise beach you will find the nice and popular Warm Up Bar, a good meeting point and place to get in the mood for the big party. The Outback Bar is located in the same area and is a nice meeting point as well. The Same-Same Lodge doesn’t play trance, house or techno and you can expect loads of alcohol flowing, crazy people and a crazy vibe.

The Ban Sabai after party takes places in the daytime after every full moon, half moon or black moon party. It is located at the beach of Ban Tai, just follow the signs, normally the entrance is free. A nice place to sit on the beach, go for a swim and a couple of drinks. The music is mainly trance. In the Southwest more places organize parties on a regular basis. If you like trance try to visit the Shiva Moon Party . At Weang Thai just outside Thong Sala there is a monthly pool party with progressive and funky house starting in the afternoon.

In the Northwest in Haad Yao the Magic Bar sometimes organizes successful pre full moon parties with live dj's playing house. The Apple Bar regularly does a party with funky house. Eagle Bar & Restaurant on the beach and the Apache Bar occasionally organize a party as well. The Pirate’s Bar in Haad Chao Phao organizes the Moon Set Party with trance and hardhouse usually 3 days before full moon.The Amsterdam Bar in Wok Tum usually organizes a party 2 days before the Full Moon.
