SOUTHWEST
AREA
The Southwest of Koh Phangan is a good choice for those who want to be near the action and nightlife while staying in a more quiet area . The main villages of the Southwest are the port town of Thong Sala and the two villages Ban Khai and Ban Tai. Good concrete roads make Ban Khai and Ban Tai easy accessible from Thong Sala and Haad Rin.
The Southwest has a long, unbroken stretch of beach with great views over Koh Samui. It starts at the foot of the southern Haad Rin hills and runs all the way up to main town Thong Sala. The beach is generally shallow and calm, which makes it also suitable for families. Show me recommended resorts, hotels and bungalows in the Southwest of Koh Phangan
VILLAGES The main town of Koh Phangan is the port of Thong Sala where most boats dock. Thong Sala has many shops, jeep and motorbike rental shops, several internet shops, massage, pharmacies and a medical clinic. Here you will also find all major facilities like banks, ATM’s, a post office, telephone and fax facilities, and travel agencies. Because of its central location Thong Sala is a good place to stay if you want to explore the island.
The villages of Ban Tai and Ban Khai both have main facilities like mini marts, internet shops, motorbike rental, massage, shops, bars and restaurants. In Ban Tai you will also find some art and handicraft shops as well as a 7 Eleven supermarket.
NIGHTLIFE In the Southwest you have many bars and restaurants to choose from. For up to date information we recommend you to ask your resort or use one of the free guide books that are available everywhere. We will mention a few long runners or places we got recommendations for from our customers.
Main town Thong Sala has many bars, some with pool tables and TV for live sporting events. If you want to eat cheap and authentic Thai food, the market next to the 7 Eleven supermarket is a great place to find different food stalls. There are also several Thai and Western restaurants. The famous Yellow Café near the pier is a good place for breakfast, lunch or just a fresh coffee. A’s Coffeeshop and Restaurant (above Buakao Inn Guesthouse) serves very good western food. For Italian food you can go to Pizza Chiara or Casa Italiana. Mexican food and latin cocktails you find at Ando Loco. In the Big Mango just outside the center on the way to Haad Salad you eat in a more quiet and romantic atmosphere.
The villages of Ban Khai and Ban Tai are relatively quiet in the evening. On the beach you have some small Thai style bars to have a beer or a cocktail. On the main road between Ban Tai and Thong Sala there are quite some restaurants, beer and lady bars. In Ban Tai the Black Moon Party is held once a month on the beach. The Half Moon Party is held twice a month in the jungle. On both parties mainly progressive and trance music is being played by the dj’s.
